Maly Drama Theatre in St Petersburg

The Maly Drama Theater was established in 1944 in Leningrad. The small company showed their performances only in the towns and villages of the Leningrad region. In 1973 the principal director G.Tovstonogova was invited by the student Efim Padve. He attracted the collaboration of famous authors and young directors, one of them was Lev Dodin. Little by little, the theater began to acquire a reputation in the city. Lev Dodin has been the artistic director of Maly Drama Theater From 1983 to the present. Now the renowned theater is the leader of the country, so it is widely known and recognized around the world.

Maly’s Drama Theater has repeatedly conquered the “Golden Mask” and it is one of the three theaters of the world, which bears the honorific title of “European Theater”.

Theater repertory

During the last decade, a whole repertoire of tetralogy has been developed by AP Chekhov, such as “The Cherry Garden”, “Playing Without a Title”, “The seagull” and “Uncle Vanya”. Since 1998, TDM has regularly participated in the Festival of the National Theater Award “Golden Mask” of the country. During this time the plays have been the winners of this award. Among them: “Playing Without a Title” (two “Golden Mask” National Prizes in the nomination “Best Performance” and “Best Director” in 1998), “Chevengur” in A. Platonov’s 2000), “La Gaviota” (“Best Performance” 2002), “Moscow Choir” in L. Petrushevskaya’s “Best Performance” and “Best Actress” 2003), “Uncle Vanya” And “Best Actor” (2004), “King Lear” (“Best Art Direction” and “Special Jury Award”, 2007). In 2004, TDM participated in the celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Festival “Golden Mask” in Moscow, where they showed their best performances. In 2005, the performance of 20 years of the theater “Five Brothers” opened the project “Golden Mask” with legendary performances of the twentieth century.

The Maly Drama Theater carries out extensive international work at the Union of European Theaters in which it was invited in 1992. The decision of the General Assembly of the Union of European Theaters in 1998 granted it the status of Theater of Europe. To date, only three theaters in the world have this status, the Odeon in Paris, the Piccolo theather in Milan and the Maly Theater in St. Petersburg. This fact is not an accident, in the last decade, The Maly Drama Theater became one of the leaders of the theatrical process in the world. Theatrical performances have been performed in almost every corner of the world in over sixty cities in Europe, Australia, North and South America, Southeast Asia where he performed theatrical performances. At present the level of theatrical technique of Russian viewers abroad are judged to a large extent by the TDM.

Theatrical practices include young directors and agents from the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Finland, Spain, Hungary, and the Scandinavian countries. Today, the actors, most of whom are LVA students from different years. Among them are teachers such as Tatyana Shestakova, Natalia Akimova, Pyotr Semak Tatiana Shuko, Sergei Kuryshev, Ksenia Rappoport, Igor Ivanov, Elena Kalinina, Alexander Zavyalov Sergey Vlasov, Igor Chernevich, Angelica Nevolina, Natalya Irina Fomenko Tychinina, Sergey Kozyrev Tatiana Rasskazova and many others.
